• One hour on one thing. Bring the specific problem, not your whole publication history. An hour is enough to get one stuck thing moving.
• Someone reading along with you. A section that won't cohere, a response letter, a decision about where to submit, a draft you've stopped being able to see. Bring whatever is actually in front of you.
• Questions, not rewrites. I won't rewrite your paper. I'll ask the question you haven't asked yourself — which is usually faster, and always leaves the work yours.

Coaching is about your writing process and how you work. Consulting is about a specific manuscript. Most people use some of both, and you don't have to decide in advance.
